The 5,000 acres of salt-pan land in Mumbai has been eyed by the powerful builders lobby, who consider it to be a prospective goldmine, for a long time. The land belongs to the Centre but many builders have entered into an agreement with the erstwhile salt-makers, who were given this land at a nominal lease by the government several decades ago.
