The "river of life" Periyar is dying a slow death. With over 437,000 tonnes of its sand being mined and sold every day, Periyar has sunk by 12 feet during the last seven years. Today, the river bed lies ravaged, and the residual craters have spawned a number of grassy islands in the heart of the river.
