Three lorries and an earthmover allegedly involved in illicit sand mining near Uvari were detained by Cheranmahadevi Sub-Collector V. Vishnu on Thursday evening. When Mr. Vishnu saw an earthmover mining sand from the mounds near Kodavilai near Uvari and loading the mineral on to the lorries, he asked the drivers to give the permit issued by the competent authority for taking sand. As they failed to produce any valid document, the Sub-Collector asked them to give him the records of the vehicles. When they failed to produce the vehicle records too, Mr. Vishnu took the lorries and the earthmover to Uvari police station and asked the police to check the mining permits and the vehicle records, if they were submitted. “If not, the vehicles involved in sand mining will be seized and cases registered against those involved in it,” Mr. Vishnu said. When the drivers failed to produce vehicle records, the Sub-Collector took the lorries and the earthmover to Uvari police station
