A 15-member gang felled and carted away 13-fully-grown sandalwood trees worth Rs 25 lakhs from Pune. The culprits first chained on duty forest guard Sahebrao Tilekar and labourer Vishwanath Ranjane to one of the trees and thrashed them till they were seriously injured. The tree-felling incident and the stoic attitude of the forest department have spread discontent in the Rajya Sarkari Van Kamgar Suvidha Manch (RSVKSM), which focuses on the welfare of forest labourers.
