Sanitation promotion in schools highlighted

State-level workshop held in Jaipur JAIPUR: Experts attending a two-day State-level workshop on Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) and School Water Sanitation and Hygiene Education (SWSHE) here over the week-end underscored the significance of maintaining cleanliness in schools, which they said would ensure higher enrolments and retention of children, especially girls. The workshop was organised jointly by the UNICEF and the Rajasthan Council of Elementary Education (RCEE) as part of the activities during 2008 being observed as the international year of sanitation. The participants from all the 32 districts of the State highlighted various aspects of hygiene and sanitation promotion in the schools and among the local communities in the rural areas. Principal Education Secretary Sudhir Bhargava said the water and sanitation facilities constructed in the schools should be put to a meaningful use and properly maintained. A documentary film, "Parivartan' (transformation), on school sanitation programme was also released on the occasion. Laxmi Bhawani of UNICEF pointed out that the maintenance of clean surroundings in the schools would make a significant contribution to the achievement of the U.N. Millennium Development Goals. RCEE Commissioner Shubhra Singh said the State Government would take steps to strengthen the infrastructure of schools. The participants were apprised of the measures for implementation of the district year of sanitation plans which would provide an opportunity to boost up the sanitation programme in the State.
