Two projects for sustainable sanitation and safe water supply systems in Dakop upazila of Khulna district have flopped due to use of low quality equipment, installation of improper equipment, water crisis and lack of training for using the new sanitation system. Modus operandi to implement the two projects is not favourable to reach the goal, says a report of Media Cell on Coastal Region of Bangladesh. Lack of knowledge for proper maintenance of latrines and toilets is another reason for collapse of a sustainable sanitation system, said Shamim Afrin, executive director of NGO 'An Organisation for Social-Economic Development (AOSED)'. Awareness among the people is needed to make sanitation system in the coastal belts in Khulna district effective, he said. As sanitation is crucial for health, dignity and development, access to sanitation system, especially for poor people, is very important, he said. In the coastal belts of Khulna district, most of the ponds having water worth drinking have been grabbed by shrimp cultivators and it has led to acute crisis of pure drinking water, said the report of Media Cell. Sand filters set up to purify water from salinity are also lying inactive, it added.
