Saran is PM envoy for climate change

Former foreign secretary Shyam Saran has been named the Prime Minister's special envoy on climate change. He will continue to discharge his responsibilities as the Prime Minister's special envoy on the IndiaUnited States nuclear deal. The Prime Minister's Office on Tuesday said that Mr Saran will be mandated to coordinate all actions and plans on dealing with climate change issues at home and abroad. Mr Saran's appointment as the Prime Minister's special envoy on climate change follows the constitution of a task force on climate change, which included minister for external affairs Pranab Mukherjee, finance minister P. Chidambaram, minister for environment and forests N.M. Meena, Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Teri chairman R.K. Pachauri. The task force coordinates national action plans for assessment, adaptation and mitigation of climate change and advises the government on measures that can be taken by India to deal with climate change.
