India is a key player in influencing global climate change initiatives. It plays a major part in the global reduction of greenhouse emissions. Energy efficiency is one way to reduce greenhouse emissions. According to the McKinsey Global Institute's report of July 2008, cost-effective energy productivity could reduce the energy demand by half, and substantially prune greenhouse gas emissions. Ecocrystal Private Limited, a Bangalore-based water treatment company, has been contributing towards designing and launching water treatment devices which help in lowering energy usage, particularly for industrial uses. Some of these technologies can be extended to household appliances like washing machines and dishwashers. One of the successful applications of Ecocrystal technology in attaining energy efficiency is in the case of water chilling plants. They are used for a variety of applications from food storage to operating air-conditioners. In these appliances, the scale in the pipes reduces the heat transfer efficiency, thus draining a huge amount of energy. In chilling plants, the scale in the pipes reduces the heat transfer by 20-30 per cent. Customers using the Ecocrystal product, Hydroion, have affirmed that the pipes are absolutely scale-free and saves energy by effective heat transfer. Aqua Appliance, a magnetic device from Ecocrystal, changes the molecular structure of water enabling it to boil in a shorter period of time. This phenomenon occurs between 50-80
