Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is a simple, time-tested solution to the water problem. Catching water where it falls and then storing it for use or for recharging groundwater has, important advantages - reduced soil erosion, stopping rainwater from flooding storm water drains and low-lying areas, removal of pollutants when water runs through the soil column and cost-effectiveness. It can be implemented in different settings - buildings, farmlands and even lakes and rivers. In Bangalore, with depleting water sources and burgeoning population, the daily water requirement of 1042 million litres per day (MLD) (as estimated by BWSSB) cannot fully be met by the civic body. Bangalore, experts say, is ideal for RWH.
