The Supreme Court yesterday restrained all the state governments and their "functionaries" from allowing felling of trees in the reserved forests, even if they are diseased, until further orders. The order came in the wake of a report about the state of forests in different parts of the country which painted an alarming picture. The Supreme Court had earlier allowed felling of diseased trees in a public interest petition. However, it found in the report that in the name of felling diseased trees, perfectly healthy ones were also being cut down. The Supreme Court appointed senior counsel Harish Salve submitted before the judges that this depredation was done with the blessing and connivance of the state governments.
