Nani Gopal Pal PURULIA- The Supreme Court has doled out an order to strip bare, the amusement parks and mini zoos in India, of their recognition, if they are not sanctioned by the Central Zoo, New Delhi. Captive animals can only be returned to the nearest divisional forest officer, or their donar organisations, if, they are recognized by the central zoo. An investigation revealed that most of the amusement parks and mini zoos, in and around Purulia, are not recognised by the Centre, New Delhi. The Purulia Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, a 50-year-old residential educational institution boasts of a mini zoo, recognised by the Central Zoo Authority of India. In 1995, the then secretary of Vidyapith, Swami Umanandaji Maharaj donated a couple of deer to Gunjan Ecological Park, an Asansol based social welfare project, run by the local police. The Maharaj is now under the care of Sishu Mongal, a health unit run by the Ramakrishna Sevaprathistan. Since the ecological park is not recognised by the centre, the Divisional Forest Officer of Durgapur has requested its president, Mr. Bastab Baidya to return the couple to Rambagan in Burdwan. To his dismay, the Purulia Vidyapith claimed the couple back. The order has urged Mr K Balamurugan, divisional forest officer of Puruliya, to scan the district's mini zoos and parks for more captive animals. Swami Atmaprabhananda, secretary of Purulia Ramakrishna Vidyapith, has been selected the warden of wildlife by the forest department The Vidyapith brags of a beautiful environment and has sheltered many birds and animals.
