With the mercury dipping, the tribal Gujjars have started their annual trek from the higher Himalayan tracts of this state to the forests of the Shivalik ranges in adjoining Uttaranchal. However, there is a lot of uncertainty as they move with their cattle and belongings to their winter dwellings this year. Hanging over their heads, like the proverbial sword of Democles, is the recent Supreme Court order asking forest and sanctuary officials to ensure that people living in forests are evicted to save the nation's forest wealth.
