Scarcity in a land of plenty

The River Krishna in Karnataka flows at distance of 8 kms from Athani. But that does not ensure that the taluk headquarter in Belgaum district and its over 100 surrounding villages have an adequate water supply during summer. With the river drying up for the second time during the present summer, regular water supply has become a distant dream. The people of Athani town are running from pillar to post for a few pots of water. Since February last 1.5 tmc of water was released to the river from the Kalammawadi reservoir in Maharashtra, which barely lasted a fortnight. An additional half tmc of water released from the Hidkal reservoir into the river after a prolonged agitation was also of little help to resolve the water scarcity, said to be the worst in the last three decades.
