Streets will get cleaner and be free of stench due to open urination in Secunderabad Cantonment limits soon as the defence ministry has approved a financial sanction for construction of modern public toilets in the area. The project, estimated to cost over Rs 60 lakh, will have private investment and will generate funds via advertisements. In the first phase, 20 modern pay-and-use public conveniences would be constructed on Built, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis. The financial sanction was pending with the ministry for almost a year. The cash starved SCB has adopted the GHMC model of inviting private investment and had finalised last year itself about 10 private agencies, with each of it being awarded contract for construction of not more than two toilets. Works on the project will start shortly and be completed in six months time. Most of these public conveniences will come up on the highways from Patny to Bolaram on Rajiv Rahadari and from Paradise to Bowenpally. Though the SCB is presently maintaining 150 public toilets, they are old and outdated. SCB chief executive officer, Mr V. Prem Chand, said all facilities including electricity and water connection, tile flooring, dressing room and separate enclosures for men and women would be provided in the public conveniences. "We have plans to construct 100 more facilities. A survey has also been completed to identify the locations. Depending upon the success of the project in phase-I, it will be extended to other parts of the Cantonment limits,' he added.
