A Chinese meteoroligst has suggested building an Ozone Observation Station in Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, to study the thin ozone layer above the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Zhou Xiuji, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has presided over a research group to study the changes in the total volume of ozone above the Qinghia-Tibet Plateau where the ozone layer is abnormally thin. Ths study showed that from 1979 to 1991, the total ozone volume in an area around Lhasa was 11 percent lower that areas at the same latitude, and the ozone volume is on a contiuous decline, dropping with 0.35 percent each year, Zhou said.
