The low-intensity earthquake that hit the Thane Khargar belt on Sunday came as no surprise to scientsis. They say that since Mumbai is riddled with seismological faults, it is prone to earthquake. "The city and its surrounding region is situated on more than ten fault plants." says V. Subramanyam, retired IIT professor of earth sciences. He has been appointed by the state government to identify the active faults in the state that are likely to lead to earthquake.
