Seizing tools used in illegal felling trees allowed

The Supreme Court ruled last week that forest authorities are entitled to confiscate not only illegally felled timber but also implements and tools used for illegal activities. Allowing the appeal of the West Bengal government against the judgement of the Calcutta High Court, the Supreme Court clarified that the power to confiscate implements was independent of the power to prosecute forest brigands.
