The Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM) is facing severe criticism over "selective" clear-felling of trees in the rich Vidarbha forests. The corporation's decision, ironically, comes at a time when the Supreme Court has ordered removal of forest encroachments so that the country's cherished goal of 33 per cent forest cover could be achieved. "It's not clear-felling. We are sparing 40 trees per hectare and are also doing soil and moisture conservation," insists the regional manager of FDCM.
