Seminar on conservation of environment

Indian Council for Enviro Legal Action (ICELA), J&K Chapter organized a seminar on Environment scenario in JK in collaboration with State Pollution Control Board at Forest house, Jammu. Ashok Sharma MLC and Chairman ICELA was the chief guest on the occasion while Abhay Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forest presided. As many as 10 speakers presented their papers on the topic and laid emphasis on preserving the plants from the wrath of pollution and eroding forests. They also suggested various means to enrich environment and check pollution. Among others Additional District Development Commissioner, Jammu Charanjit Singh Jasrotia, Director Rural Development Jammu, Director Animal Husbandry Jammu, other Forest Officers, Social workers and members of environmental organizations were present. Addressing a seminar on State of Environment in J&K at Forest Information Centre, Sharma called upon environmentalists, scientists, industrialists, NGO's, opinion workers, legislatures, students and people at large to come together and do whatever they can do for conservation of environment in J&K. He said J&K alongwith Uttrakhand, Himachal Pradesh and similarly situated areas in the Himalyan belt were better placed in environment and ecology because of domestic forest, rivers, water bodies and ideal climatic conditions. However with ruthless cutting of green forests, rapid urbanization and industrialization, emission and smoke, brick kilns ever rising traffic, un-checked use of plastic and polluting of water bodies besides massive construction activity eroded formed the environment and ecology at the state to greater extent. Speaking on the occasion, Charanjit Singh stressed the need for adopting echo-friendly techniques in agriculture and allied activities and Forest Conservation be given utmost attention as the degrading environment is a great threat to the existence of mankind. Chief Conservator of Forest Abhay Kumar lauded the efforts of the ICELA under the stewardship of Ashok Sharma for creating wide spread awareness among the common masses and mobilizing then to work for the up gradation of the environment by way of planting more trees and checking the growing pollution.
