DURGAPUR : The CPI-M has decided to be very careful about acquiring land in areas which have elected Opposition candidates in the panchayat election. The state industry minister, Mr Nirupam Sen, and the departmental secretary, Mr Sabyasachi Sen, today held a meeting here with party leaders, district magistrates of four south Bengal districts ~ Burdwan, Bankura, Birbhum and Purulia ~ and the Asansol-Durgapur Development Authority top brass to discuss land acquisition. The minister said: "We feel that an all-party consensus is absolutely required before we go in for land acquisition in those areas any further.' Mr Rathin Roy, Durgapur mayor who is also a state committee member of the CPI-M, the party's secretary of the Bankura district unit and Mr Bansogopal Chowdhury MP were present at the meeting. Mr Nirupam Sen said: "We must convince villagers and the matters of proper compensation against land loss and rehabilitation should be discussed openly with the land-losers.' It may be recalled that in Burdwan alone work on five mega projects estimated at Rs 50,000 crore couldn't be initiated due to strong resentment from villagers. The process of land acquisition is yet to begin in places like Salanpur, Baraboni where two major integrated steel units by the Bhusan group and Abhijeet group and in Andal where a Rs 10,000 crore aerotropois project have been proposed. The LF lost badly in Salanpur, Baraboni and partly in Andal. At Saltora, Bankura, the state had proposed a SEZ last year, which earned stiff opposition and an all-party meeting was boycotted by the Trinamul Congress.
