The University of Peshawar (UoP) and the provincial wildlife department have locked horns over the acquisition of the Azakhel Park, Nowshera, which was allotted by the district government to the varsity for establishing a botanical garden. The Nowshera district government had allotted 83 acres of land of Azakhel Park to the UoP for setting up a botanical garden under a 99-year lease contract in 2005, which was later terminated after a demand from the wildlife department to set up a zoo there. The wildlife department was earlier asked to identify 50 acres of land in the Peshawar district for setting up a zoo, an official of the UoP told Dawn here on Monday.
