JAIPUR: To draw attention to the ill-effects of nuclear plants on human lives and the eco-system, a group of social activists on Wednesday visited Pink City to garner support against nuclear power in India. Scientist Soumya Dutta and member of the National Anti-Nuclear Plant Yatra warned the people of Rajasthan against the construction of a nuclear plant in Haryana. "If there is major accident in a nuclear plant at Haryana it will affect people in Jaipur. Such plants require plenty of water for coolants. The plant is coming up near a stream, the water of which is used for farming," said Dutta. The unfortunate part is that India has 20 nuclear reactors located in high-density populated area. He argued that Fukushima accident has forced many countries to rethink their nuclear programmes. Despite, this the Centre is hell-bent on setting up a string of nuclear plants all along India's coast. The biggest of these is coming up in the earthquake-prone region of Jaitapur, in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. India's scientists are making "the hilarious claim" that India's safety standards are better than Japan's and that there is no cause to fear, he said. Citing international reports, he said our reactors are considered to be the most inefficient and dangerous in the world. In fact, some of them were denied clearance by the USA, he claimed. He argued we should invest massively in energy-saving and development of renewable energy technologies. He asked for the support of civil society in this movement. The group demanded that all new nuclear power plants be scrapped immediately.
