Bhubaneswar: Normal life was crippled on the day as heat wave continued in most parts of Odisha with mercury touching 46.6 degree Celsius in the state capital of Bhubaneswar and Talcher. The state's highest temperature of 46.6 degree C was recorded here and Talcher while as many as seven towns recorded temperature above 45 degree C on Wednesday.
According to the weather office, interior Odisha, particularly the western belt, is continuing under similar heat-wave conditions like before and the cities like Angul, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Hirakud, Balangir, Titilagarh and Sonepur were the worst affected where the maximum day temperature continued to be more than 45 degrees, breaking records of last few decades.
Low voltage and undeclared power cuts have made lives miserable even as there is no sign of any respite from the scorching sun in the next few days.
The weather report said, while Angul recorded 45.3 degrees Celsius, Sambalpur recorded 45.2, Hirakud 45.1, Balangir 45, Bhawanipatna 44.5, Baripada and Jharsuguda 44.2 each, Kendujhargarh 43.7, Malkangiri 42.5 degrees and Phulbani 42.2 degrees Celsius while Cuttack recorded 44.2 and Balasore 41.8 degrees Celsius.
Over 1500 bats died of scorching heat at Baripada which recorded the highest-ever 46 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Ironically, the coastal town of Chandbali in recorded the maximum temperature of 46.5 degrees.
The Bhubaneswar regional Met office predicted intense heat-wave conditions in the next 24 hours all over the state, while rain or thundershowers accompanied with wind reaching speed from 60 to 70 km per hour are likely to occur at one or two places.
However, the Met office sources said the heat-wave conditions are likely to ebb marginally after two days following pre-monsoon showers as the South-West Monsoon is advancing towards the east coast and may touch Odisha coast by the end of next week.
