HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, JAN 14 Stench and litter pervades major water nullahs in the Commercial Capital as sewage and waste water flows unhindered in the water channels in the absence of sewerage network. The problem is further compounded by the fact that concerned authorities, including the Margao Civic body have done little to clear the stagnant waters of the litter and waste. Take the case of the nullah near the Kudchadkar hospital. This nullah carries sewage and waste water right from the heart of the city before emptying into the Xelpem Lake behind the hospital. Waste, including plastic and litter lie scattered all over the nullah, especially near the hospital, but that has not spurred the authorities to order a clean-up. That the nullah is a neglected lot is evident by the fact that while the government has taken up four-laning of the Navelim Church-Margao fly over road at a huge cost of Rs 6 crore, funds are not forthcoming from the government to desilt the water channel. The situation at the Old market nullah is no better either. Waste is found dumped all along the nullah, creating a stinking environment in the water channel and a health hazard for the nearby inhabitants. Admits Margao Municipal Chairperson, Savio Coutinho:
