SEZ bonanza to come at a price

Special Economic Zone (SEZ) developers may have to pay a political cost for setting up the tax-free enclaves in a move reflecting a strong feeling in the ruling coalition that steps were needed to quell the perception that they had been subsidised at the cost of farmers. In what reflects the growing backlash against SEZ developers, rural development ministry is mulling a proposal to make them compensate loss of agricultural land by turning wasteland into cultivable tracts.
