Documents on SEZs (special economic zones) reveal that altogether 19 companies had applied to the Goa government for setting up SEZs in the State. Of these, the Pratapsing Rane-headed coalition government had made recommendation to Board of Approvals, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, in 15 cases. These included two government SEZs promoted by Dayanand Narvekar-headed Information Technology (InfoTech) Corporation, namely IT Habitat in Dona Paula and IT Park in Socorro. After the SEZ policy was enacted in the monsoon session of the Goa assembly in 2006, SEZ applications were processed under provisions of SEZ Act under which approvals of many authorities were not required. It was after all the approvals were obtained that Infotech Corporation wrote to the government that it didn't want to continue with SEZ status for its two projects. CM Digambar Kamat ordered the work on IT habitat to be stopped after the people of Taleigao brought out alleged irregularities in allocation of plots as some plots were allotted to real estate companies. Work on the IT Park was stopped following Court intervention when some villagers filed writ petitions on environmental grounds. In both the cases, the opposition was not against IT projects per se but on grounds of protection of forest area in Socorro and irregularities in case of Dona Paula project. Of the 15 SEZs recommended to the Centre, in seven cases, land was allotted to the promoters by government-run Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC). As the GIDC at its Board meeting yesterday decided to revoke/withdraw the land allotment made to SEZ promoters, Herald produces here from Government documents, details of the seven SEZ companies, like the names of promoters, land area, nature of SEZ, projected investmetn and employment potential.
