The Punjab Government has decided to abolish the well-publicised Shagun scheme started by the previous government. Giving this information while talking to newsmen here today the Minister for Social Security, Mr Santokh Chaudhary, said the scheme was not pragmatic. Thousands of applications were pending at the subdivisional level due to which the government had decided to do away with the scheme. Instead, the state government had decided to launch the Kanya Jagriti Jyoti Scheme in place of the shagun scheme. The government would provide an insurance of Rs 5,000 to the new-born girls of poor families. This scheme would help the girls in attaining education. The Budget provision for this scheme would be made in the next financial year, the minister added.
