Residents of AN-AM Block of Shalimar Bagh here are waging a war to save their greens that include 80 full-grown trees and a local park that they claim would be destroyed if the Government goes ahead with its plans to construct a multi-storey underground parking lot to accommodate the growing number of vehicles. The residents have also appealed to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and senior officials to save their greens. Shalimar Bagh AM Block Residents' Welfare Association president A. B. Ghosh said: "We have appealed to senior Government officials to help us save the greenery of our area. The Government plans to build an underground parking lot which according to them will give parking facility to those coming to a local shopping complex. Till a few years ago before the Municipal Corporation of Delhi took up maintenance work here, the local residents themselves maintained the park. The park is used extensively by the residents for their morning and evening walks and is the green lung of the area. If such a construction work takes place here then it will kill the only local green patch available to us.' The residents also said that they were not consulted when the Government took the decision to construct a parking lot in the area. "This green plot is our green lung and over a thousand residents here use the space constructively. The residents' welfare association was not consulted about what the Government plans to do with the park and we were shocked when we came to know that 80 full-grown trees would be cut down to accommodate a parking lot which can come up in any vacant unused plots in the area,' added Dr. Ghosh.
