New Delhi: The environment ministry has decided to look into how it plans to relocate thousands of people out of the 600 plus national parks and sanctuaries in the country. TOI had reported how the new guidelines issued by the environment ministry fell foul of the Forest Rights Act. The guidelines allowed relocation of forest dwellers out of their forest lands without following the provisions of the Act which lays down strict criteria for declaring any wildlife patch free of people. Initially, environment minister Jairam Ramesh came out with a clarification against the report and claimed that the guidelines were in conformity with the Act. His clarification contradicted the guidelines but he defended the rules and did not ask for changes. The guidelines do away with the need of scientific evidence that the areas can only survive as wildlife habitat if people are relocated. The rules also do away with the need to get the consent of the gram sabha for relocation or their involvement in the process of demarcating an inviolate area.
