The Environment Ministry disagrees. Environment Minister A Raja said, no international norms would be violated by breaking a ship in the country. "The Basel Convention (prohibiting transboundry movement of hazardous waste) does not prohibit a ship from being dismantled here. The Gujarat Maritime Board has the competence to deal with pollution from dismantled ships. Alang has the required infrastructure to deal with toxics," Mr Raja said at the Social Editors' Conference. The Minister's statement is in stark contrast to the stand taken by the apex court's monitoring committee headed by G Thyagarajan.
