Rahul Mangaonkar & Paul John | TNN Ahmedabad: If racketeers bottling water containing harmful microbial organisms in appalling conditions and peddling it as an ISI marked product were posing a grave risk to public life, licensed '1ST manufacturers fare no better. "Getting licence for bottling and selling packaged drinking water with ISI mark is not easy at all" a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) official had told TOI. In one of the BIS certified bottling plants TOI visited on Tuesday off SG Road, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) health officials had issued show cause notices on various grounds. If one BIS certified bottling vin Antao plant can throw quality norms to the wind, the state of 35 other BIS licence holders in the city and elsewhere in the state can be gauged. This bottling plant has 35 distributors and one of the largest clientele in areas close to Satellite, Bodakdev and SG Road. AMC officials had swung into action following TOI expose on the water scam. One after the other, AMC officials have slapped 11 notices on Monday and more followed on Tuesday, on bottling units across city. But, BIS officials have been content after three raids in the last one month. BIS, over the last several months, has been raising quality issues with TST licence holders in the city, "During our inspections, some of the licence holders have tank leakages, workers may not be wearing aprons or water test reports would not be periodic. Rest assured all our licence holders have qualified lab technicians who test for microbiological contaminants," says a senior BIS official. There are at least 25 criminal cases pending against various bottling racketeers in various courts of Gujarat.
