The Aldona Bachao Abhiyan (ABA) has already collected over 1,000 signatures in an ongoing drive to request the Chief Town Planner to deny any permission for hill cutting activities at Carona-Aldona. Besides collecting signatures after masses and poojas, volunteers are undertaking door-to-door campaigns in different wards of the village. Secular bodies like village associations and social clubs have also supported the ABA in the drive. A volunteer, Benjamin D'Souza of Cottarbhat-Aldona, said the response has taken him by surprise. "An elderly lady, who wanted to sign the petition, said she was illiterate and volunteered to affix her thumbprint. Since I did not have an ink-pad with me, I used the ink from my fountain pen to enable her to put her thumbprint on the petition,' said D'Souza. An ABA member told Herald that over a thousand signatures had already been collected so far. "The petition has also been put online at www.petitiononline.com/SaveGoa/petition.html and has garnered over 70 signatures in just two days,' the ABA member said.
