It will be the California-based firm's largest global facility. California-based photovoltaic modules maker Signet Solar has said that its Indian operations, expected to start production by 2009-end, will be the company's largest global facility. The upcoming plant at the special economic zone in Sriperumbudur near Chennai will produce 300 mw power. The plant is being set up at an investment of Rs 2,000 crore. The company's first plant in Germany may start production by June this year and will have an initial capacity of 60 mw, which will be hiked to 120 mw by 2010. The Indian operations, with manufacturing facilities across locations, are expected to produce 300 mw in five years. The first phase of this project will have a capacity of 60 mw. Signet Solar, a two-year-old company, plans to become one of the world's leading PV modules manufacturers, company chairman Prabhu Goel said. He added that Signet was not a power producer, but would be a major supplier for global PV panel-based power producers. Senior company executives said the production in India was targeted at European markets. Germany, where the company's maiden plant is coming up, is expected to produce 700 mw solar power.
