There is no improvement in River Indus flows at Gudu Barrage and position has worsened with inflow in Indus at Tarbela being only 20,300 cusecs while Tarbela storage diminished and attained the dead storage level of RL 1369ft. A spokesman of Irrigation and Power Department described it a very serious and alarming position as, he said, hereafter the supplies to Sindh are on the basis of run of the river. Water availability at Sindh Barrages on River Indus is considerably short. The withdrawal and shortage at Gudu was 756 cusecs with shortage by 72 percent while at Sukkur it was 14,730 cusecs with 50 percent shortfall and at 2045 cusecs at Kotri with 54.5 shortage. He said the Irrigation and Power Department, by arranging rotational supplies, has made efforts to manage irrigation of standing wheat crop throughout the province in the command areas of perennial canals. Pointing out that wheat harvesting has started in some areas in ower Sindh, the spokesman said at this stage if any wheat crop along perennial canals needs water the farmers are advised to contact local Irrigation officers so that the same is supplied by making extra ordinary rotational arrangements. He said there has been sufficient snowfall and the river flow position is likely to improve with rise in temperatures. Spokesman said speculations in some quarters about shortage in Kharif season are premature as the Kharif season will start from first of April and by then the temperatures in the River catchment areas are likely to rise. However, in case there is shortage in early Kharif the same shall be managed by rotational supplies and efforts will be made to supply water throughout the province for Kharif season with the planning to achieve Kharif sowing targets.
