The Haryana government has approved Rs 1.09 crore for increasing the capacity of the solid waste management plant at Bakrianwali in Sirsa. The plant presently has a capacity of 50 tons per day (TPD) and it will be increased to 75 TPD, said J Ganesan, Deputy Commissioner, Sirsa. He said the capacity was being increased in view of the increasing solid waste in the town. The plant, which was set up in 2006, is lying defunct since almost then. However, the DC clarified that the work of segregation and dumping of solid waste was being carried out in the plant, though the treatment of waste to produce compost was not being carried out due to viability issues.
Meanwhile, the authorities are working on a plan to set up a power generation plant from solid waste, in cooperation with an NGO that has already set up such a project at Pune. Though the negotiations were at a preliminary stage, the project, if set up, would produce 1.4 MG power from solid waste, Ganesan said. — TNS
