Delhi-based Vidhi Khandelwal, an eight-year-old girl, has been skating 3,000 kms to spread the message "Prevent Female Foeticide". This amazing girl, a test-tube baby, started her marathon from Delhi's India Gate and has so far travelled across four states: Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat. Covering a astonishing 30 kms per day and loudly singing "Desh Ki Betiyaan Bachao", she has already moved citizens who have witnessed this marathon. Starting the marathon on March 9 and ending it on April 22, Vidhi has lit the torch together to ignite the fire and spread the message to stop female foeticide which is drastically affecting the sex-ratio in our country. On April 22, 2008 Lions Club International, NSS Units of Seva Mandal Society, Shah College of Arts and Commerce and B.M.N College of Home Science felicitated this gallant girl. In her speech, Vidhi spoke like a real social activist talking about the injustices against women in India when she gives birth to a baby girl. She questioned as to why a female child is still treated as a curse and a burden in Indian families? When India worships Goddesses like Saraswati, Laxmi, and Durga, it is unbelievable that a girl child should be treated like a slave in the very country? The felicitation was to fete the achievements of this eight-year-old girl as a messiah of the Girl Child Campaign and admire her bravery. Interestingly, Vidhi's mother Anju Khandelwal is president of the recently founded NGO Self Help Children Foundation and has made Vidhi take part actively in all the functions organised by her. Speaking to FPJ, Anju Kandelwal said,"Vidhi and her younger brother are test-tube babies and since the age of 4 she has been practising skates for hours. Her dream is to become an actor who would like to work in women-oriented films. She accompanies me to various NGO activities. She wakes up early in the morning around 4 am and starts practising her skating and then later leaves for school. During the marathon she suffered from anaemia, however with intake of medicines mixed in liquids she managed to complete her mission which makes me proud of her".
