SKUAST awareness camp on vegetable, seed production

SKUAST-Jammu organized an awareness-cum-training programme on Vegetable /Seed production at Village Gajansoo, Block Marh in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Agri-Entrepreneur Development Association. The program was attended by 50 progressive vegetable growers from 16 different villages of Marh block. The farmers were advised for cultivation of quality seed of super fast varieties to get maximum productivity of vegetables in short time. They were also advised to follow the package of practice recommended by SKUAST-Jammu. Dr. J.P.Sharma, Professor & Head, Division of Vegetable Science & Floriculture, while addressing the farmers disclosed that vegetable seed production has a wider scope for Jammu farmers due to varied agro climatic conditions available in Jammu province. Besides giving higher economic return to the farmers, vegetable seed production also ensure timely availability of quality seed to all the farmers of Jammu and Kashmir and challenge the growing monopoly of private companies in vegetable seed market. The farmers can go for seed production of Potato, Methi, Cucumber, Cauliflower, Knol-khol, Broccoli, Cucurbits, vegetable pea and okra. Dr. Sanjeev, advised the farmers to go for cultivation of high yielding varieties which are early in maturity and this way they can increase cropping intensity at their farms. He suggested the cultivation of newly identified varieties by Division of Vegetable Science & Floriculture like G-40 in Knol-khol, Early Green in Broccoli and C-13 in Palak, etc. Dr. Satish Kumar, emphasized the role of integrated nutrient management (INM) in vegetables and suggested that farmers must make combined use of organic manure and chemical fertilizers for long term sustainability in vegetable production. The programme was co-ordinated by Paramanand Padha and vote of thanks were presented by Kulbhushan Khajuria, general secretary JKAEDA. Seed samples of high yielding vegetable varieties were also distributed free among the participants.
