Setting aside the Bhopal Municipal Council's unanimous decision to reject the proposal for shifting of slaughterhouse to a new location on the outskirts of Bhopal, the State Government on Tuesday ordered the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) to follow the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives in time limit.
The extended deadline given by the NGT to shift the slaughterhouse ends on March 31, 2018, after which delay of each day will attract a fine of Rs 10,000.
Located in Jinsi, the locality adjoining both old and new city areas of Bhopal, the congested slaughterhouse does not have an effluent treatment plant.
The alternative sites suggested by the State Government and the municipal corporation have been shot down in the past by protesters from those localities.
On August 3, the Municipal Council had decided that no slaughterhouse should be opened in the BMC limits.
In the 85-member municipal body, the Congress has 27 councillors. The chairman of the BMC council, Surjit Singh Chouhan had said that he had to reject the proposal because the majority of councillors, including those from the Congress, had opposed it. He said he had to respect public sentiments because each councillor represents thousands of people.
In the order, Deputy Secretary of the Urban Development and Housing department Bharat Yadav stated that the BMC should on the directives of the NGT select a new site for shifting of the slaughterhouse.
