Anyone passing through Dadu Majra cannot miss the unbearable stench. Reason: A garbage dumping site is located in the area and garbage collected from the entire city is brought here. And since it is uncovered, the stench that hits a passerby is unbearable. Heavy rains have further added to the misery as the foul smell increases manifold during rains. The solid waste management plant set up in the area has a capacity of processing around 300 to 350 metric tonnes of garbage per day. However, it will take another three months for the plant to start functioning completely. The labourers here work under unhygienic conditions and without any protective gear. Area Councillor Kamlesh says that the residents of the area are being poisoned slowly. "When the site for the dump was designated, population here was sparse. At present around 40,000 people are living in the colony. They should not be exposed to such waste. The site should be shifted to some other location in the outskirts. All requests to the authorities, however, have fallen on deaf ears,' she says. "While the authorities have announced various measures for preventing spread of cholera and dengue, the dump has not even been sprayed for many days. It has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The authorities are not concerned about the health of the residents', she adds. An official with the Municipal Council said that garbage from across the city is collected from designated areas and then dumped at Dadu Majra as it is allocated for this purpose. Once the processing of the plant starts, the problem will be eased.
