Mumbaikars and people elsewhere in Maharashtra had a reason to 'feel better' on Friday, as Prime Minister A B Vajpayee announced a grant of Rs 500 crore for the development of Asia's largest slum Dharavi in north-central Mumbai, and assured the Democratic Front (DF) Government of 'adequate' financial assistance for tackling the drought situation in the state. Mr Vajpayee improved on a Rs 100 crore grant announced by late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for Asia's largest slum during the centenary celebrations of the Congress way back in 1985, by sanctioning a grant of Rs 500 crore for further up-gradation of slums at Dharavi, where more than half a million of the city's 12 million inhabitants live.
