Slum rehabilitation scheme runs into rough weather

The Maharashtra government's controversial scheme to provide free homes to slum dwellers is faltering despite chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh's letter to his party chief Sonia Gandhi defending the plan.In an attempt to kickstart the scheme, the state cabinet has decided that each slum family eligible for the so-called slum rehabilitation scheme in non-prime areas of the city will now pay up to Rs 25,000 to private developers.
