Small hydel power projects are harmless: Dy Speaker, MLA

"If the localites do not oppose, then we do not have any objections for small hydel power projects,' said Deputy Speaker K G Boapaih and MLA M P Appacchuranjan.
Speaking at a discussion on the development of Kodagu at Patrika Bahvana in Madikeri on Tuesday, they said hydel power projects are neither harmful to the environment nor submerge low laying areas. However, we will not object, if the residents are happy with the hydel power projects.
They said there was no opposition for Abby small hydel power projects. If the government approves, we will not oppose it.
They said "we are trying our level best for tree ownership right.' The revenue and forest department's notifications have been withdrawn.
Mr Bopaiah said CM has announced Rs 25 crore special package for the overall development of Kodagu. Rs 3 crore has been released for the development of rural roads. The grants will be released for other roads as well. There was no question of shortage of funds for the development of roads this year.
"To prevent the migration of youth from Kodagu, we will pressurise CM to open Infosys or Wipro unit in Kodagu. Apart from this, we will also urge CM to start medical college in Kodagu,' they added.
They said Rs 17.5 crore has been released to Kushalnagar Engineering College. The tender will be invited soon to start the work. District administration has submitted a report on mini airport at Chikkabettageri-Doddabettageri or Koodige. Highway Authority Secretary Gokuram has assured to declare Sakleshpura, Kodlipete, Koodige, Kanive, Kushalnagar, Nelyahudikeri, Virajpet as state highway.
