Soil amendments help in tackling salinity problem: researcher

Soil salinity and sodicity is a global problem and multi dimensional approach is required to control this menace. This was stated by Abdul Ghafoor, Director Research, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad while addressing a seminar on "Activities and Achievements of Soil Salinity Research Institute, Pindi Bhattian" held at Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad.
Total eradication of salinity and sodicity seems to be very difficult, however better management practices are very helpful to tackle this problem, he further added. Dr Ghafoor stated that majority of our farmers are unable to use soil amendments due to paucity of resources and they should be subsidised to enable them to amend their soils.
The professor further drew the attention towards the ever-increasing use of brackish water in the form of tube well irrigation, which contributes significantly in deterioration of quality of irrigated soil. He underlined the importance of training of extension workers so that they could guide the farmers in most appropriate and scientific way to solve this problem. Dr Abdul Rashid, Director General Agriculture (Research), AARI, Faisalabad said that we should learn to live with the problem of soil salinity and sodicity.
He informed that scientists of AARI, Faisalabad have developed salt tolerant varieties of many crops and fruits which is a good approach to solve this problem. Dr Shahzada Munawar Mehdi, Director Soil Salinity Research Institute, Pindi Bhattian informed about the research activities and achievements of the institute.
He told that institute has screened salt tolerant varieties of different crops which give better yield in saline and sodic soils. He also told that dates, guava, ber and jambolana are salt tolerant fruit plants suitable for saline and sodic soils. Prominent agricultural scientists attended the seminar and presented research papers regarding the solution of problem of soil salinity and sodicity.
