The Urban Development Department set up an ad hoc committee to review and suggest normative standards for the five core services of water supply, underground drainage, solid waste management, roads and streetlights. The fact that a whopping Rs 7,326.52 crore capital investment is required to provide the five basic services - water supply, under-ground drainage (UGD), street lights, solid waste management and roads - to the urban areas of Karnataka speaks volumes about the quality of life of the urbanites. The woes do not end here. The State needs another Rs 1009.10 crore for annual operation and maintenance of these services.
