The Madhya Pradesh government, by slashing taxes on LPG and diesel, has tried to give some relief to the common people. However, this decision has come too late. The government effected reduction by 3.02 percent on LPG gas and 2 pc VAT on diesel. This would bring down the price of LPG by Rs 10 and the price of diesel per litre would be reduced by 61 paise per litre. As regards petrol price, no change has been made in taxes. Thus the State government, by reducing the tax on diesel has not done great justice to its people. It may be noted that the tax rates on petro products in Madhya Pradesh are the highest and the people were expecting even more relief. Along with reduction in prices of petrol and diesel, the people should also think seriously to reduce the consumption of petrol/disesel. Some days back, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and some ministers had set example by travelling in his bicycle and reaching Vallah Bhavan. However, this has not brought much relief. At the same time curtailing the tours of ministers and labour class people may not bring much relief. Most important step is to curb misuse of petrol and diesel effectively. Encouragement should be given to pool system. Need is to curtail unnecessary expenditure of petrol/diesel by adopting the car pooling system. At the same time the public transport system should be improved drastically. The government may still bring down the taxes on petroleum products. The state government seems to have failed in curbing wasteful expenditure of diesel and petrol. Tax being levied on LPG, petrol and diesel may be reduced further. As we cannot exercise control over prices of crude oil in the international market, hence the only option left is optimum use of the product. People may have to change their lifestyles. A sacrifice for the sake of petrol products would be worth emulating by other people in the society.
