According to the home ministry, Lodhas are one of the 52 primitive tribes facing extinction. While the 1991 census put Lodha numbers at 68,000, a more recent survey put their figure at 46,669. They are found scattered in the Medinipur, Bankura and purulia districts and are the third most backward of the West Bengal state's 38 scheduled tribes.
