South Africa shortlists bids for state forests

  • 22/05/2003

South Africa shortlisted six groups this week to bid for a 75 percent stake in the government's Komatiland Forests, after an earlier 335 million rand ($43 million) deal to sell the forests was cancelled. It gave the short-list as Bonhuer Consortium; Miri Consortium; Pamodzi Consortium; Parharpur Cooling Towers; SFM/Londimvelo Consortium and Sappi Consortium. Komatiland operates 20 plantations that cover around 129,000 hectares in the country's eastern Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. It also operates two sawmills, a veneer slicing plant and export facility in Richards Bay. In September 2002, South Africa cancelled the sale of the forests to Zama Resources after it said the deal had been "tainted" amid allegations of corruption.
