Sparks fly over eviction in Kolkata

Attempts were made to set fire to shanties of encroachers again on Wednesday, the second day of the eviction drive along the banks of the circular canal at Beliaghata in east Kolkata. Urban Development Minister Ashok Bhattacharya told reporters at the State Secretariat that for the second consecutive day, miscreants attempted to set fire to the shanties vacated by the settlers. Timely intervention of the police and fire-fighters prevented the fire, he said adding the eviction was peaceful. Meanwhile, Kolkatans on Tuesday observed a different kind of Human Rights Day with the local police launching an evacuation drive to uproot over 10,000 families from the the Beliaghata canal area of east Kolkata.
