The Draft Forest Policy of the Assam State has asked for special courts at the district level for quick disposal of forest-related cases. It also called for steps to establish green Bench in the Gauhati High Court. While recommending measures to tackle unlawful felling of trees in forest and smuggling of timber, the Draft Policy also said that protection mechanism should be strengthened by involving local people through village level committees. These committees should be empowered and provided special incentives to prevent the forest offence, it said.
