More than 1,65,000 vials of spurious oxytocin were seized from medical stores in Sagar district's Bina town in the first week of this month, police said here today.
Oxytocin - misused for enlarging watermelon, gourd, brinjal, cucumber etc besides enhancing milk production in animals - is available in the market for Rs 15 per vial while the fake ones were being sold for 50 paise. Analysis at a local laboratory revealed the true nature of the oxytocin two days back.
Following a tip-off, Sagar's Superintendent of Police B S Suryavanshi directed action. Food and Drug Administration officials were part of the operation. The oxytocin was brought from Jabalpur to Bina but originated in Uttar Pradesh. In the wake of the raids, 6,557 injections were found abandoned in Bina.
Consumption of oxytocin-laced milk and vegetables may cause grave ailments such as impotency and depression.
